Spooktacular Stories: Thrilling Tales for Brave Kids

Hello! I am so thrilled you’ve tuned in to hear about my latest book.

At the start of the year Michelle Worthington, founder of Share Your Story, put out a call for scary stories and poems. It was a competition and the winning entries would be published in the 2019 Anthology.

The Butcher’s Boy: The Inspiration & Process

I have to say, I’ve never written a scary story before, so this task was a challenge for me.

My Dad is a butcher and I remember that as a kid the back of his butcher shop was a pretty scary place. I decided from the start this would be my setting. I also grew up reading way too many Goosebumps books and these two things were the inspiration for my short story – The Butcher’s Boy.

Initially I wrote two versions and I can tell you the other one was a total flop (aka crap). This version was also not quite working, until I completed a Scribbles live round call all about archetypes. After that, I knew I had to change my mother character for the story to work (deliberately being vague here so I don’t spoil the ending for you!) And once I did, it all just came together. Actually, there was also the step where I sent it to my critique buddy, Fiona Lloyd, who gave me some incredibly useful suggestions (thank you, Fiona.) <3

Some time after hitting the send button, I received an email that said congratulations, your story The Butcher’s Boy will be published in Spooktacular Stories: Thrilling Tales for Brave Kids! HOORAY!

Reader Beware: The quality of illustrations in Spooktacular Stories is remarkable higher and not nearly as frightening as this…that’s why I’m the writer 😉

About the Book

“A collection of short stories and poetry with a Halloween theme by the authors and illustrators of Share Your Story. From scary noises in the dark to ghoulish characters causing trouble, this anthology is perfect for young readers aged 8 to 12, as well as grown ups who are just as brave.”

The best thing about being involved in this project is that for every book purchased, another book will be sent to a child in an Australian Hospital. How great is that?!

It is available to pre-order now through Amazon, so you will have yours in time for Halloween.

Also, there is an exciting Book Launch happening at the Mad Hatters Bookshop in Manly, QLD – so if you are local, please grab your tickets here, it’s sure to be a spooktacular event!

Thank you to everyone who has already ordered a copy, shared the details or sent me a congrats! I really appreciate your support 🙂

Much love

Sharna
