Review: ‘Chip’ By Kylie Howarth

I’m finally making my way through some of the CBCA’s shortlisted picture books for 2017.  ‘Chip’ by Kylie Howarth has been a stand-out for me so far. If you’ve ever encountered a cheeky seagull who wants your fish and chips, you’ll love this story.

Chip loves chips! In fact, he’s absolutely obsessed with them. But, Joe, the owner of the seaside hot chip van is fed up with Chip and his friend’s greedy ways. So Joe puts a stop to the visitors feeding the seagulls and Chip and his friends have to find a way back into Joe’s good books.

Ultimately, this is a story about determination and working hard for what you want and there is a subtle  ‘don’t feed the wildlife’ message, too. I was drawn to the cover right away and the illustrations have a very cool, retro feel. I have a feeling lots of children will be seeing ‘Chip’ in every greedy seagull at the beach this summer.

Be sure to visit Kylie’s Author Page for Chip teacher’s notes and activities, a super cute colouring in page and her other books.

Thanks for reading and I’m off to get myself some…chips!
