Boy oh boy do I love Christmas! And of course, Christmas themed picture books! I couldn’t resist a Christmas post this December and I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce you to the new releases for 2017, and the best part is – they are all Aussie.
Bouncing Bouncing Little Joeys: A Bush Christmas
Written by Lesley Gibbes / Illustrated by Doris Chang
The first thing I noticed when I picked up this book was the gorgeous illustrations and the sparkling gold decorations; it’s one of those books you want to run your hand over. The magic doesn’t stop there. Follow the three little Joeys as they prepare for Christmas in their own special way. This beautiful story is written in verse, and is one you will want to read over and over again. I highly recommend you add this to your Christmas Book collection.

Santa’s Gone Surfing
Written By P.Crumble / Illustrated by Thomas Fitzpatrick
When Santa visits Australia he gets really hot in that red suit of his, so he’s decided to go surfing instead of delivering all of the presents! Luckily Trevor, his dusty old ute and a bunch of emu’s (including Squinty – whose bloodshot red eye lights up the sky), are up to the job. There are many laughs to be had on this adventure as they travel around Australia saving Christmas. Children will enjoy the funny illustrations and rhyming text, and I have to add that it even had my husband laughing – so it must be a winner!

That Christmas Feeling
Written by Lili Wilkinson / Illustrated by Amanda Francey
Christmas this year is a little different for Dottie. She is staying at Grandma and Grandpa’s while she waits for her Mum and Dad, and that special Christmas feeling is yet to arrive. Dottie reflects on all the special traditions her family shares each year and Grandma and Grandpa try their best to re-create them, but it’s just not the same – will Dottie find that special Christmas feeling? This is such a sweet book that celebrates family, traditions and it reminds us all what’s really important at Christmas time.

This is the second book for Malibu the surfing Kangaroo (check out the first book in the series, The Three Legged Kangaroo from Uluru, here). Santa, Mrs Claus, the Reindeer and Santa’s Elves are having a wonderful time celebrating Christmas at Bondi Beach. But there’s one little Elf who isn’t enjoying himself; he’s grumpy and at times, very naughty. Will our hero Malibu be able to help his new friend find happiness? Your children will delight in seeing this little Elf get up to some very funny tricks and the illustrations will make you smile too. It also has a wonderful message about being true to yourself and finding the courage to do so.
